The piece traces the neighborhood’s jazz legacy — the clubs that once hosted Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, and the era that earned Fillmore its “Harlem of the West” nickname — and how that history led to the festival’s founding in 1986.
